Let's Play Boules - Crystal Palace edition - by Nick Goodheart

In an interview with Barry Wing the Head of Recruitment for the London Petanque Club for the London Championship which is set to take place at the Crystal Palace Park on Saturday 8 June 2019 he gave his view on the teams to watch out for.

It was found at last year’s inaugural event that between the iconic sphinxes (which are the hallmark of this historic venue) the terrain is most challenging.

This tough terrain resulted in some world champions falling by the wayside and last year’s champions were a scratch team comprising a Dutchman, a Hungarian and a Mauritian and only Dutchman Rob de Haan is playing this Saturday with Slyvestre & Dinesh who are strong players who play in England and Rob might be worth an outside bet to win twice in a row.

The prize pot is over £5,000.00 and following last year’s success the entry has doubled in size from 64 triples to 128 triples which will be the UK’s biggest one day international petanque event.

The favourites must be team ‘Hurreau’ consisting of five times world champion, Frenchman Bruno Le Bouriscard playing with compatriot Damien Hurreau and Mark Greenberg (USA). Not far behind that team is the current world number one, the Frenchman Dylan Rocher, in Team ‘Masters’ playing with compatriot Stephane Robineau and New Yorker Shuchi Vermi.

Other International teams who will be in the mix as outsiders to win are team ‘Holland’ comprising of Noel Kempeneers, Essa Agzoul and Erik Telkamp and team ‘New Zealand’ with Joanne Lippard, David Lippard and Lorrent Fossaert.

There is also a strong presence from Belgium with Manual Redondo, Jean Claude Brohee and Loic Dambrain and those that attended last year will not forget the excitement caused by the aggressive play of the Mauritians Fabrice Vincent, Rovin Gopaul and Pravan Bundhoda.

Teams with an English mix worth looking at are team ‘Monty’ comprising of London Petanque Club’s own Monty Quaia and Frenchman Fedrico Faucher who are partnering with the current world singles champion Swiss Maiky Molinas.

Prominent English International’s Sofiane Lachani and Nic Baxter have recruited Southern Frenchman Yassine Benatia who may give team ‘Baxter’ a real buzz.

The long established England player Matt Blyton has teamed up with Lee Edgar and German Alexander Bauer which may bring out a surprise, if they can master the difficult terrain that Crystal Palace Park has to offer.

Also keep a close eye on team Fifi as Frenchman Diddier Fifi and Patrick Bakens playing with Stephen Dayl could cause an upset or two.

Teams that regularly play the English Petanque circuit and will be keen to test their skill levels against the International opposition and may bring out a surprise win over them are :-

  • ‘Huntley’ – Jeremy Huntley, Sarah Huntley and Sam Blakey

  • ‘The Rejects’ – Baz Wing, Matthew Horrigan and Lucien Camber

  • ‘Railway’ – Scott Ashby, Rowland Jones and Jason White

  • ‘Je Ne Sais Quoi’ – Bastien Montredon, Ashley Jamison and Phil Bradshaw

  • ‘Clayton’ – Phil Clayton, Sean Prendergast and Callum Lombard

  • ‘Blows’ – Jack Blows, Reece Gould and Ross Jones

Also some voices from the past that may through tons of years of experience come up with a surprise win ‘Rowland’ comprising of Londoners Bruce Rowland and Sylvain Borsi and French exile Robety Silvy.

Also spare a thought for local lads Simon Adamsdale, Keith Vines and Mark Barlow.

This is going to be an exciting day of Petanque in England.

There is free admission for the public and there will be a high volume of passers-by who will stop to watch a game or two while enjoying a drink and a bite to eat in the carnival atmosphere.

Shooting Competition

As an added attraction to the event this year, we are excited to announce that we will be holding a Precision Shooting Event. It will comprise two phases

Phase 1 will be an opportunity for anyone attending to take their chance to strike a boule at 10 metres. One shot will cost £5, three shots £10, and you can have as many goes as you wish to pay for. Everyone who succeeds in hitting the boule will go into a shoot-out which will require additional skills to find the deadliest shot. The winner will receive £50 in cash and advance to Phase 2.

Phase 2 gives the lucky winner to pit his or her skills against one of the World Champions playing in the competition!! Maiky Molinas, Bruno Le Bouriscard or even the great Dylan Rocher will compete for a prize of £150. And to give our phase 1 winner a chance, he/she will shoot from a shorter distance than the World Champ. Never mind the prize money, how about the bragging rights!!
